Loxoprofen is the NSAID Japanese doctors prescribe most often for pain, under the brand Loxonin. It is not approved in the US or most of Europe, so many visitors have never heard of it; it is roughly comparable to ibuprofen or naproxen. Tablets, patches and gels are all common.

Loxonin S (60 mg) is a Class 1 OTC drug: a pharmacist must be present and will ask a few questions before selling it. Patches (Loxonin S Tape) are Class 2 and easier to buy.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Is Loxonin the same as ibuprofen?

No. Both are NSAIDs and are used for similar pain, but loxoprofen is a different molecule. Do not take them together, and avoid loxoprofen if you have had stomach ulcers, kidney problems or aspirin-induced asthma.
