Emergency contraception

Levonorgestrel (Plan B, morning-after pill)

Levonorgestrel (emergency contraception)

Emergency contraception is much harder to get in Japan than in the US or Europe. Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg (NorLevo and generics) normally requires a gynecology visit, though a pharmacy pilot allows some pharmacies to sell it after counseling. It must be taken within 72 hours, so travelers who want a backup should bring their own; it is not a controlled substance.

Over the counter

Prescription only in principle. Since 2025 a limited number of pharmacies can dispense it without a prescription after a pharmacist consultation; elsewhere you need a clinic visit, and the cost (¥7,000–15,000) is not covered by insurance.
